Bruin Lake's bluegills are the star attraction, making up 57% of the fish population with growth rates above state average (+0.1) and a Schneider's Index rating of 'good' at 5.0. In trap nets, bluegills averaged 6.5 inches with 40% measuring 7 inches or larger. The successful redear sunfish stocking from the early 1990s created a self-sustaining population that now averages 7.8 inches with one-third reaching 9+ inches, providing larger panfish than typical bluegills. Rock bass are abundant at 11% of the catch, averaging 7 inches with 25% reaching 8+ inches. Black crappies average a hefty 8.8 inches with exceptional growth rates (+0.7) well above state average, though they're represented by only three year-classes. The western basin drops abruptly to 48 feet with marl and sand substrate in shallows transitioning to pulpy peat in deeper areas, while the eastern half stays under 5 feet deep. During summer stratification, good oxygen levels extend to 26 feet in the thermocline (17-26 feet deep), making this the productive fishing zone. Largemouth bass grow slightly below average (-0.3) but show good reproduction with nine age-classes including an 11-year-old specimen, though only 12% exceed the 14-inch minimum. Northern pike average over 20 inches with length-at-age above average, providing quality predator fishing despite low numbers. The popular fishing pier at Bruin Lake Campground on the west end provides excellent shore access, with park personnel reporting fair to good panfish catches. Cisco presence, though rare with only 2 caught, is significant as they're limited to deep southeast Michigan lakes with good water quality. The lake connects to the Portage Creek chain system, allowing fish movement between Bruin, Watson, Patterson, Woodburn, Halfmoon, Blind, and Hi-land lakes.
