Hunters Lake is naturally a closed basin — SWFWMD calls it an isolated system with no major surface inflows or outflows. Every connection was dug: canals link it to Hog Pond, Weekiwachee Prairie Lake, Lake Crescent and Lake Century at high water only, so none is continuously navigable. A west-shore control structure at 19.2 ft NGVD separates the lake from the Baffin Waterway canals draining to the Gulf; water leaves that way only near the top of the lake's range.
SWFWMD measures this lake monthly, and the June 2026 reading was 12.71 ft NGVD29 — 4.39 ft below the adopted Minimum Lake Level of 17.1 ft and about a foot above the record low. Surface area moves with stage on a basin like this: the adopted-levels report gives 429 acres with the lake at 19 ft, and the lake has swung almost nine feet between its 1970 high and 2001 low. The 2026 backdrop is dry region-wide — SWFWMD declared an Extreme water shortage covering all of Hernando County in March 2026 and extended it through October 1. The district's monthly Hydrologic Conditions Report is the place to check a stage before a trip; no county page publishes one. Vegetation is managed by hand: the county runs a mechanical harvester here, and floating tussocks are a recurring navigation hazard that Mosquito Control has sprayed in past years.

Hunters Lake is a residential Spring Hill lake in a karst basin — roughly 429 acres with the water at 19 ft, ringed by back yards and something like 108 private docks, shallow, weedy and kept navigable by Hernando County's harvesting vessel. The one public ramp, at the end of Kenlake Avenue on the north shore, is a single concrete lane in good condition with parking for 11 trailers. The concrete isn't the problem; the water in front of it is. Sand buildup has made the launch area too shallow to use, per the county's own capital plan, and SWFWMD's June 2026 reading of 12.71 ft NGVD29 sits below the elevation the ramp's bottom edge was surveyed at in 2005. A $200,154 state boating-improvement grant for a channel restoration was awarded to the county for FY 2026–27, but the work hasn't been built — call Hernando County Waterways Maintenance at (352) 754-4060 before towing a boat here.
If you get on, expect a shallow, weedy lake fished for bass, crappie, bluegill and redear — with a mercury advisory strict enough that black crappie from this lake are do-not-eat for everyone, per the state health department. Duck hunters work the main lake in season, mornings and evenings, and ten canals carry no-hunting signage near the houses — launch at dawn in waterfowl season and expect shooting on open water.
