Ramp Quirks & Etiquette
The Riverine Top End
Eureka West is where Rodman is still a river — the upper limit of the reservoir's backwater, and the state's pick for exploring the riverine section down to Payne's Landing. The water off the ramp moves and winds between trees. One concrete lane with a narrow dock, an accessible fishing pier, a pavilion, and scattered parking that rarely fills.
Mind the Ramp's Edge
The ramp drops off fast at the end of the concrete. Back down deliberately — this launch has claimed trailer axles from drivers who trusted it a foot too far.
The Explorer's Launch
Budget time to wander even without a boat: an old boardwalk gone beautifully to seed, a wooden footbridge over the cypress knees, and views of the Eureka Bridge and the remnants of the wooden crossing that preceded it. Bring the camera along with the rods — and in the warm months, treat the manatee caution signs at the dock as more than decoration.
Drawdown-Proof
When the every-few-years drawdown empties the pool and closes the downstream ramps, the Eureka end keeps working — the river flows through here at 11 feet just as it does at 18. That makes this pair the reservoir's reliable winter door in drawdown years, and the put-in of choice for seeing the exposed drowned forest by boat.
Paddle Both Directions
Downstream is the flooded-woodland run toward Payne's Landing and the reservoir proper. Upstream, the free-flowing Ocklawaha winds all the way to Silver Springs State Park — one of Florida's great river paddles — with the Ocklawaha Canoe Outpost next door handling rentals, cabins, campsites, and shuttles for either direction.
