Lake Weir doesn't connect to anything you can boat to: an internally drained sandhill lake feeding the Floridan aquifer, with no river in or out and no tie to the Harris Chain. The roughly 6,800-acre system — Marion County's largest — takes in Lake Weir proper, the Sunset Harbor lobe, and 326-acre Little Lake Weir, linked by a vegetation-filled canal that may not pass powerboats. The isolation keeps the water clear and sandy.
Summer is the main event: beach days at Carney Island, boat-up lunches at Eaton's Beach and Gator Joe's, and — per FWC — crappie anglers who switch to night fishing over the brush attractors when the days get hot. Spring and fall bring bass and shellcracker work along the vegetation edges; winter shortens Carney's gate hours to 5 p.m. Watch water levels: FWC's lake profile carries a low-water caution near shore (still posted as of July 2026), and Hope Ramp runs floating docks specifically for level swings. No algae alerts in the last 12 months — the most recent was a partial-lake alert in February 2025.

In November 1934 a quiet pair renting a cottage on the Ocklawaha shore turned out to be Kate 'Ma' Barker and her son Fred of the Barker-Karpis gang. At dawn on January 16, 1935, FBI agents surrounded the house; tear gas went in, gunfire came out, and intermittent shooting ran until 10:30 a.m., leaving both Barkers dead. The museum calls it the longest gun battle in FBI history — the FBI's own account makes no such claim. On October 27, 2016 the house was floated across the lake by barge to Carney Island, where Marion County runs it as a museum, bullet holes intact.
The lake itself is Marion County's biggest and nothing like a standard Florida bass bowl: internally drained sandhill karst, no river in or out, clear, sandy and deep — FWC lists depths exceeding 20 feet, and SJRWMD classes Weir (with Lake Yale) as the upper Ocklawaha's only mesotrophic lakes. The culture is beach-first — Carney Island's 750-plus acres of sandhill islands and shoreline beaches, Eaton's Beach and Gator Joe's serving boat traffic — but the fishery is real work too: largemouth, chain pickerel, shellcracker, bluegill, and a crappie program built on 12 FWC brush attractors plus barrel units, fished at night in summer.
Pay the $7 at Carney Island, launch off the six lanes early, and fish the attractor buoys or the vegetation edges before the beach crowd wakes up. Book the Ma Barker tour weeks ahead — it's a five-minute walk from the ramp. Kayakers get a sand-beach launch onto Little Lake Weir, and Eaton's is the boat-up finish on water clear enough to see your anchor set.
