Crowding Summer beach weekends fill the park itself, but with six lanes and 80 trailer spots the ramp rarely backs up. Winter gate hours (close at 5 p.m.) compress the fishing day — plan the retrieve.
Plan B — if this lot is full Hope Boat Ramp, 2 miles south — but only if you hold a Marion County annual park pass; it's pass-holders-only at the gate. Otherwise your alternatives are DIFFERENT water: Lake Griffin (Harris Chain) to the south, the Ocala National Forest trio — Lake Kerr, Lake Eaton, Lake Dorr — to the northeast, or Rodman Reservoir for Marion County's other flagship fishery.

Six Lanes Behind the Gate
Three double lanes — six total — with both launch and staging docks, 80 paved trailer spots and flush restrooms: the biggest launch facility on the lake by a mile, graded Good to Excellent by FWC. The $7-per-vehicle daily fee is the county's current price at the attended gate; FWC's inventory still shows $5, which is stale. Pay the seven and don't argue with the sign.
A Real Beach Day Attached
The ramp is the front porch of 750+ acres of sandhill islands, causeways, wetlands and shoreline beaches — swimming beach, playground, trails, picnic shelters. This is the rare Florida ramp where half the trucks in the lot never launch anything. One firm county rule: no pets, anywhere in the park.
The Ma Barker House Lives Here
Since its barge ride across the lake on October 27, 2016, the Ma Barker shootout house has stood on Carney Island as a county museum — bullet holes still in the walls. Tours are by reservation through mabarkerhouse.org, and as of July 2026 they're booking far out. Pair it with a launch day; it's the best history stop on any Florida lakeshore.
Kayak Doors, Big Lake and Little
Two hand-launch bonuses inside the same gate: a floating kayak dock near the main ramp for Lake Weir, and a sand kayak-launch beach onto Little Lake Weir — the ONLY public access on the 326-acre sibling lake, since the connecting canal is vegetation-filled and powerboat passage is unverified.
