Ramp Quirks & Etiquette
South-End Old Florida
Thirty-five acres of live oaks, Spanish moss, and thatched chickee pavilions at the end of Southport Road — state-owned since 1966, county-run since 1967, and it feels it in the best way. Three paved lanes with a launch dock under the oaks, a restaurant and concession for after, and dogs welcome.
Airboats & Group Camping
Boggy Creek Airboat Adventures operates from the park; give tours their lane at the basin. The same concession runs the restaurant, a bait shop open Monday through Saturday, and family sideshows: a butterfly exhibit, gem mining, baby gators, a monthly farmers market. Group camping and RV facilities take reservations — book ahead.
Gateway to the Chain
You're launching just west of the C-35 canal — the lock route south to Lake Cypress, Hatchineha, and Lake Kissimmee. Chain-runners stage here; the famous grass line just south of the locks produced the official 16-10 lake-record bass.
Hours Are Real
Unlike the 24-hour Lakefront and Whaley's ramps, Southport runs 6 AM to 8 PM with the park on sunrise-to-sunset — no midnight launches. The lime-rock lot is generous but unpaved; heavy rain makes it soft in spots.
Wildlife Bench
The park's oak-and-cypress shoreline supports bald eagles, snail kites, sandhill cranes, wood storks, gopher tortoises, Sherman's fox squirrels — and the alligators the airboat customers came for. Bring the camera even on a fishing day.
