Its upstream end is the Little Withlacoochee confluence at River Junction, where the river widens and straightens; about a mile downstream sit the Iron Bridge primitive launch and the USGS Croom gauge. There is current, and the level moves with rain upstream. On FDEP's paddling trail these launches sit between River Junction at Mile 18 and Iron Bridge at Mile 20.
Stage, not acreage, is the size measure on a river widening. The local reference is USGS gauge 02312500 at Croom, about a mile downstream: 39.12 ft NAVD88 on 31 July 2026, roughly seven feet below action stage. Low water is the usual constraint — FDEP warns that in dry seasons paddlers may hit logs and hyacinth jams on this upper section. The boating rule runs on a different gauge: the Idle Speed No Wake restriction on this reach activates only when the USGS Trilby gauge upstream reaches action stage (58.8 ft NAVD88), and Trilby read 48.44 ft the same week, about ten feet below it. Algae is the other calendar: a Florida DOH blue-green algae health caution for Silver Lake Campground has been in effect since June 16, 2026 — check the state HAB notification page and stay out of visible bloom.
