Ramp Quirks & Etiquette
Two '98' Ramps
This is the lake ramp on US 98 — locals call it the '98 Boat Ramp.' Seventeen miles south on the same highway, the SFWMD Istokpoga Canal Boat Ramp Area does NOT connect to Lake Istokpoga — it serves the Kissimmee River side. Navigate to 720 Istokpoga Park Access Road, Sebring, and you're at the right one.
Half Ramp, Half Park
A double-lane concrete ramp is the working end, but the rest is a genuinely pretty county park: a long boardwalk through the cypress to a big fishing pier, nature trails with osprey, limpkins, snail kites, and sandhill cranes, and rescue horses along the entrance drive that regulars stop to feed. Bring water — there's none on site — and bug spray.
Steep and Thin
The ramp itself is well built but pitched steep, and the water off the end runs shallow when the lake is down — a 23-footer can need some real effort getting back out. Bass boats and pontoons are the everyday traffic; if you're on the bigger end of that range, check the current lake stage before committing.
North-Shore Position
You're launching into the lake's north end, with the Arbuckle Creek mouth to the northeast — a productive area whenever there's flow — and the open drift water that winter speck anglers work. When a south or southwest wind is running, this shore takes the brunt of five miles of fetch; time your return accordingly.
Gator Country
Count on it: you will see alligators here, from the pier, the boardwalk, and the boat. This lake carries one of the denser gator populations in the region — keep pets leashed, keep hands and feet in the boat, and enjoy the show from a respectful distance.
