Downtown Tavares and Mount Dora sit right on the water. Lake Dora Boat Rentals at the Tavares City Marina rents pontoons and bass boats ($150–$275 for 4/8 hours, 407-928-1035); the Lakeside Inn (est. 1883) keeps two guest docks; Mount Dora Boating Center & Marina (352-383-3150) is the full-service marina, on the lake since 1970.

Lake Dora is the 4,385-acre heart of the Harris Chain — eight lakes totaling about 75,000 acres. Boats pass lock-free to Lake Beauclair at the southwest end and through the 1.2-mile, cypress-lined Dora Canal to Lake Eustis, then via the Dead River to Lake Harris. Locks guard the far ends: Burrell on Haines Creek toward Lake Griffin, and the Apopka-Beauclair Lock toward Lake Apopka.

Seasonal Conditions

Dora is often the first Harris Chain lake to turn on in spring — bedding bass fill the residential canals and the Dora Canal seawalls as early as late winter. Summer moves the game offshore to eelgrass flats, shell bars and FWC fish attractors (coordinates on the FWC Harris Chain page). FWC's forecast rates Dora among the chain's best redear and bluegill lakes. Two 2026 caveats: the chain ran dirty with little hydrilla in January, and afternoon chop is routine on the open crossing between Mount Dora and the Dora Canal. Expect seaplane traffic off Tavares year-round, heaviest during splash-in events, and late-March ramp closures at Wooton Park for the Sunnyland Antique Boat Festival.

Is the Mount Dora boat ramp (Simpson Cove) open?
Not per FWC — the inventory lists Simpson Cove 'Temporarily Closed' as of July 2026, with no reason or reopening date posted, and the city's own facility page carries no closure notice. Call Mount Dora Parks & Recreation at (352) 735-7155 before you tow. The record October 2025 flood (17.86 inches of rain in Mount Dora, $10–$12M in citywide damage) may be the reason, but no official source ties the ramp to it. Wooton Park West in Tavares is Lake Dora's open trailer ramp meanwhile.
Is Lake Dora the same thing as Mount Dora?
Mount Dora is the city on the lake's northeast shore; Tavares, the Lake County seat and self-styled 'America's Seaplane City,' holds the west shore. The lake is Lake Dora — not Lake Dorr (that's in the Ocala National Forest), and not Lake Medora or Eldorado, which are different Florida waterbodies entirely.
What is the Dora Canal, and can I take my boat through it?
It's the roughly 1.2-mile channel connecting Lake Dora to Lake Eustis — originally a natural stream called the Elfin River, dredged and straightened in 1879 by Capt. T.R. Boyd for his steamboat Panasoffkee, and long attributed to famed sportswriter Grantland Rice as 'the most beautiful mile of water in the world.' Yes, you can run it: it's idle speed/no wake, lined with old-growth bald cypress, and busy with tour pontoons at midday — paddlers should hug the shoreline and duck into the side canals. Kayaks and boats under 12 feet can launch right at the canal from Summerall Park (1001 Wells Ave, Tavares, free, 7 a.m.–11 p.m.).
Why are seaplanes landing on the lake?
Because Lake Dora is a runway. Tavares Seaplane Base FA1 is an FAA-designated public seaplane base with a 3,000 x 200-ft water runway (9/27) off the downtown waterfront — rebuilt after Hurricane Irma with a $5.8M project that added a 340-ft floating seaplane dock, an 80-slip marina and a combined boat/aircraft fuel dock. Splash-in events draw 30-plus floatplanes. For boaters it's real traffic, not scenery: aircraft land, take off and taxi to the docks in the corridor off Wooton Park, so keep your head up near the Tavares shore.
Do I need to pass a lock to run the chain from Lake Dora?
Not for most of it. Dora connects lock-free to Beauclair (and Carlton beyond it) and, via the Dora Canal, to Eustis — then the Dead River to Harris and Little Lake Harris. Locks guard the two ends: the Apopka-Beauclair Lock (a 15 x 60-ft chamber, the smallest on the chain) on the way to Lake Apopka, and the Burrell Lock on Haines Creek toward Lake Griffin, which resumed normal operations July 11, 2026 after rehab. Both run 7 a.m.–7 p.m. Feb 16–Oct 14 and 8 a.m.–6 p.m. Oct 15–Feb 15.
What's the rule at the Deer Island sandbar now?
Turn the speakers off. On December 16, 2025 the Lake County Commission approved a quiet zone covering 1,000 feet off Deer Island's west shoreline — the chain's big raft-up spot, sometimes hundreds of boats. Amplified sound (speakers, media players, instruments) is prohibited on a 'plainly audible' standard; deputies issue a warning first, and a repeat is a second-degree misdemeanor. The county attorney was explicit that engine noise is not regulated — it's amplified noise only.
Can you eat the fish?
In moderation, per the standing DOH mercury advisory: most listed species — largemouth bass, crappie, bluegill, redear and the rest — up to two meals per week for everyone. The exception is sunshine bass: women of childbearing age and young children should hold to one meal per month; everyone else two per week. That's from the 2021 DOH guide, still the version DOH links as of mid-2026.
How big do the bass get?
FWC's Harris Chain lake-leader table has Dora's best at 12 lb 4 oz (John Bozeman, February 8, 2014). The bigger story is the flip: FWC's 2020–21 creel survey found bass taking 72% of directed effort on Dora/Beauclair — water that was 83–93% crappie-driven in the 2000s — with strong age-1 numbers credited to expanding submersed vegetation. Winning tournament bags keep coming off Dora's offshore eelgrass, including the April 2026 BFL win that used Dora and Beauclair fish.
Does Mount Dora really have a lighthouse?
It does — the 35-foot red-and-white striped lighthouse at Grantham Point, dedicated March 25, 1988 and community-funded, billed as the only inland freshwater lighthouse in Florida. Its 750-watt photocell powers a blue pulsator at night. It stands at the Simpson Cove/Gilbert Park waterfront, next to Palm Island Park's boardwalk — where a bronze statue remembers 'Old Joe,' the roughly 15-foot gator said to have patrolled Lake Dora around 1900.

Lake Dora is where the Harris Chain shows off: 4,385 acres between two waterfront towns. Mount Dora holds the northeast shore, with the 35-foot lighthouse at Grantham Point, boat parades in December and a 100-boat sailing regatta in March. Tavares — 'America's Seaplane City' — holds the west, where seaplane base FA1 runs a 3,000-foot water runway off Wooton Park, rebuilt after Hurricane Irma with a $5.8M marina and fuel dock. The canal connecting Dora to Lake Eustis began as the Elfin River, dredged in 1879 for the steamboat Panasoffkee — the cypress-tunnel mile long attributed to sportswriter Grantland Rice as the most beautiful mile of water in the world.
