Lake Miccosukee is a karst prairie lake on the Leon-Jefferson line 15 miles northeast of Tallahassee, with active sinkholes at both ends draining straight to the Floridan Aquifer — when the aquifer drops, the lake follows it down. A 1954 earthen dike, spillway and gate ring Miccosukee Sink at the north end; a wooden weir plugs Lloyd Sink at the south. No surface channel connects it to any neighboring lake. Most of the water lies in Jefferson County; two of the four ramps sit on the Leon side.

Seasonal Conditions

As of July 2026 the lake is in a full natural dry-down: drought hit Exceptional (D4) in fall 2025, the sinkholes were dry by December, and the US-90 gauge read 75.32 ft NAVD88 on July 27 — roughly 4-5 ft below the historical full-pool reference. When it carries water, this is a spring lake: bluegill and shellcracker bed in wadeable shallows from spring into summer, black crappie school in the runs through the cool months, and largemouth work the vegetation edges. The productive back country is airboat and mud-motor territory in the best of times. During regular duck season (late November to late January), hunting runs Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays plus posted holiday dates, and internal-combustion motors over 10 hp are banned lake-wide. Florida prairie lakes typically rebound with outstanding fishing two to four years after a dry-down refills — that clock starts when the rain comes.

Is Lake Miccosukee connected to the Miccosukee Tribe or the Miccosukee casino?
No. The Miccosukee Tribe of Indians of Florida — and its Miami-area casino and resort — is in South Florida and has no connection to this lake's management. This north-Florida lake shares its name with the historic community of Miccosukee on its northwest shore. Two more name-sharers: the Miccosukee Land Co-op is an intentional community in eastern Leon County, and Miccosukee Road is a Tallahassee canopy road. None of them are the lake.
Why is Lake Miccosukee dry right now — and will it come back?
It's a natural dry-down, the lake's oldest habit. Miccosukee sits on active sinkholes that drain to the Floridan Aquifer, and it historically emptied and refilled on a roughly 10-year cycle before the 1954 dike suppressed it. Fall 2025 brought Exceptional Drought (D4) to the area, the edge sinkholes were bone dry by December, and FWC's spring 2026 public meetings (Feb. 26 in Monticello, April 30 at the Miccosukee Community Center) addressed what the agency calls a full lake dry-down — naturally occurring, per FWC. How big is Lake Miccosukee, really?
Depends when you measure. The size chip carries 5,007 acres — the USGS National Hydrography Dataset polygon, the site's standard for consistency. Leon County's 2023 waterbody summary says 6,257 acres, an ecology report puts it at 6,312 acres at the 80-ft full-pool stage, and FWC's waterfowl guide rounds to 'approximately 6,000.' This is a stage-dependent prairie-marsh lake — its water area swings with rainfall and with whether you count the vegetated marsh. The figures measure different lakes in time.
Can I use my bass boat here?
Think smaller. Even at full pool this is a shallow prairie lake — historically 2 to 5 feet over most of its area — where thousands of acres of maidencane and bonnets choke the back country, and the south ramp's official FWC name literally includes '(Smaller Boats).' Jon boats, mud motors and airboats are the native fleet. Add the duck-season rule (no internal-combustion over 10 hp lake-wide during regular season dates) and, as of July 2026, the small matter that the lake is in a full dry-down with effectively nowhere to float a trailered hull.
When can I duck hunt, and what are the restrictions?
Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays during Regular Duck Season (Nov. 22-30 and Dec. 6 - Jan. 25), plus the posted holiday dates: Nov. 27-28, Dec. 25-26, Jan. 1-2 and Jan. 19. What's the dam at the north end, and why do people argue about it?
In 1954, an earthen dike, concrete spillway and manual gate went up around Miccosukee Sink to stop the lake from draining naturally (a wooden weir guards Lloyd Sink at the south end; Ducks Unlimited helped rebuild it in 1998). It worked — the bottom was exposed only twice between 1954 and 1988 — and that's exactly the problem: without periodic drying, vegetation and muck took over, until aerial surveys in the 1976-88 era showed only about 19% open water. Anglers blame the structure for a permanently shallower lake; ecologists say the lake needs to dry out and bake periodically. FWC ran managed drawdowns with muck removal and burns in 1999-2001 and again in 2012. No source records who built it; the National Inventory of Dams lists it as Lake Miccosukee Dam, FL52502.

Where's the bluegill and shellcracker fishing?
In the spring beds, when there's water — this lake's old reputation among panfishers was 'the biggest copperhead bluegill anywhere' (angler lore, so grade accordingly). Work the wadeable shallows and vegetation edges from spring into summer; black crappie school in the runs in the cool months. The productive back sections are realistically airboat-or-mud-motor water. All of it waits on the refill: prairie lakes like this typically come back with outstanding fishing two to four years after the water returns. If the shellcracker itch can't wait, Merritt's Mill Pond over in Jackson County is the Panhandle's standing bluegill-and-shellcracker destination — different water entirely.
What's a Miccosukee gooseberry?
One of the rarest shrubs in North America — an endangered species known from just three sites on Earth, two of them on this lake's shores. The lake also carries a serious alligator population (roughly 1,200 by one ecology report's estimate) and draws wintering ring-necked ducks, teal and wood ducks. Even bone dry, it's a live piece of wild Florida.

When it holds water, this is a shallow-water specialist's lake: two to five feet over most of its acres, walled with maidencane and bonnets, locally famous for spring bluegill and shellcracker beds, with crappie in the runs and largemouth on the edges — jon-boat, airboat and mud-motor country, not bass-boat water.
