Ramp Quirks & Etiquette
The Big Gated Lot
Two concrete lanes, a launch dock, flush restrooms, rangers at the entrance, and 49 trailer spots — the largest trailer lot on Lake Griffin by a wide margin. The $5 per-vehicle entry covers the launch. The catch is the gate: 8 AM until sunset, every day of the year.
Dead River Idle-Out
This ramp doesn't drop you on open water — you launch onto the Dead River marsh channel and idle out through the grass to the main pool. It's a pretty ride past herons and gators, but in low-water years it gets genuinely skinny; trim up and take it slow.
No Dawn Patrol Here
The 8 AM gate means no first-light launch and no after-dark retrieval — the same trade as every state-park ramp. If the bite demands dawn, launch free at Herlong Park (24 hours) and save the State Park for civilized-hours days.
Reason to Linger
Florida's second-largest live oak — roughly four centuries old — stands a short walk from the ramp, and the park around it packs 40 water-and-electric campsites, two miles of trails, a playground, kayak and canoe rentals, and Epic Waterboat pontoon tours. This is the ramp where a fishing trip and a family weekend are the same trip.
Wild Neighbors
The park's own wildlife list runs from ospreys, eagles, and otters to bobcats, coyotes, and the occasional bear in the sandhill — and the marsh channel adds gators and wading birds to every launch. Paddlers can rent on-site and explore the Dead River marsh without ever raising an outboard.
